The Fishing Scene

In our first edition of Air Highways Magazine in 1996, the editors of BC Scene included a page supplied by BC Fishing Industry sources to help our readers identify the various species of fish that inhabit our coastal and interior waters. In that tradition, we will be including a complete gallery of marine life. See a sample of some of the Freshwater varieties below from information by Fisheries Renewal BC. More to come.

Fisheries Renewal BC
Focusing on the renewal of B.C.'s fisheries and fish-dependent communities. In 2000-2001, the Corporation has a budget of $16.5 million for four programs that invest in fish stocks, habitat restoration and fisheries and seafood development and diversification. Investments by Fisheries Renewal BC focus on:

* More fish *New fisheries *Adding value to the harvest

Fisheries Renewal BC has a 123-member board of directors, appointed by the provincial government, who represent a broad range of interests in B.C. fisheries. Initial support for Fisheries Renewal BC came from Forest Renewal BC, which has contributed close to $30 million since the corporation's beginning. Other support includes a total contribution of $10 million from BC Hydro since 1998.

Family Fishing fun: Last year, Fisheries Renewal BC was one of several sponsors to support B.C.'s first ever

Family Fishing Weekend. The aim of the event is to encourage women, youth, families and friends to get outdoors and experience the sport of fishing. During Family Fishing Weekend (June 15-17, 2001) all Canadians can fish freshwater lakes and streams compliments of the Province of B.C. All other regulations are in effect.
