Railway
Museums in Western Canada
Item
and photos by Jerry W. Bird
Like
many Canadian cities, Vancouver is a child of the CPR, which
was British Columbia's one way ticket to Confederation in
1867. After all these decades, railways still hold a
fascination for many Canadians, which is why I was so
thrilled with my first visit to the West Coast Heritage Park
in Squamish at the north end of Howe Sound. We came as
guests of BC Rail, arriving via the Royal Hudson tour from
the North Vancouver terminal. Following a delicious brunch
in the elegant vintage dining car, our group traveled by bus
to the museum site, which was far larger and more impressive
than I had ever envisioned it would be.

Our
visit to the West Coast Railway Heritage Park was
enhanced by a colourful, professional presentation
by our Tour Guide James Larcombe (left and above
right). We know you will enjoy his colourful
description, as you explore the various facets of
railway operation in BC since the 1890s. Details to
come.

Watch
for the full story on this page very soon, but for the
moment, we present several views of the park we captured
during the recent visit. Captions and much more detail to
come. This story will be featured in BC Scene Magazine's
summer 2001 edition and will be repeated in the 2002
yearbook.
